A local council is moving to block new Wind turbine projects in the area.
Arran Elderslie Council has unanimously passed a bylaw that would control wind turbine development, based on health concerns and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Councillor Mark Davis says Section 7 of the Charter calls for “the protection of life, liberty and security of person”, and the bylaw says the wind turbines cause serious health effects.
Davis says while the Liberals at Queens Park have effectively limited municipal powers over energy projects thru the “Green energy act”, this bylaw goes to the Federal level to defend residents.
There is no project under construction in Arran Elderslie, but the councillor says there is a proposal on the drawing board for up to 75 wind turbines near Burgoyne.
It would affect people in Arran Elderslie and Saugeen shores.
Mark Davis says council believes there are health issues with wind turbines that need to be addressed before any future projects get going.
