We finally saw some rain in our area this past weekend.
Environment Canada’s Senior Climatologist Dave Phillips says that rain was welcomed with open arms from farmers and gardeners.
He says that for March and April, the amount of rain was about a third or a half of what we would usually see in both Wasaga Beach and Collingwood.
Phillips says the temperatures have also been record warm, especially in April, and that meant that all the moisture we did get was just sucked back up into the atmosphere.
He says that because the last 3 weeks leading up to May didn’t see a drop of rain, there was almost a kind of an invisible drought below the ground.
In terms of this past winter, Phillips says that snowfall totals were actually up.
But he quickly adds that there was no snow in March or April, which is something that we’ve never seen before.
Looking ahead to this coming summer, Phillips says that they are predicting it to be warmer than normal for May, June, July and August.
He also says that the date their looking at now also shows that we may have a drier summer than normal too.
And Phillips says that their predictions so far are in sharp contrast to the previous 2 summers, which he describes as dreary.
