Dozens of High School Students from several schools in Grey Bruce are in Holland to take part in the 65th anniversary celebrations of the liberation of that country by the Canadian Army.
In addition to taking part in the May 5th celebrations a special presentation will be made to a representative of the Dutch Royal family by some students from OSCVI in Owen Sound.
History Teacher Dave Alexander says a former grad of the school, Harold Van Wyck was Signals Officer, serving in Holland at the end of the war and received the written command ordering the end of hostilities.
He says the command came from the 21st Army Group and was passed on by Van Wyck to the commander at the first Canadian Army Headquarters.
He says they have prepared a commerative copy of the so called Liberation Day order which will be presented to a representaive of the Dutch Royal Family.
Alexander says the copy of the order orgianlly obtained by Van Wyck has now been donated to the Billy Bishop Home and Museum, where it now is on display.
Students from Chesley District High, Grade 10 to 12 students at OSCVI and Grades 9 to 12 at West Hill Secondary School in Owen Sound are also taking part in the Liberation Day event.
