A pay raise has been approved for members of Southgate council, the deputy Dayor and Mayor.
However, the new rates won’t go into effect until after the municipal election this fall.
Southgate mayor Don Lewis says they may have been too frugile in the past and when looking at neighbouring communities they were low.
In fact, Southgate’s Mayor and councillors are currently the lowest paid in Grey county.
With the increases approved at council this week — Southgate will be in the middle of the pack compared to other nearby towns.
The Mayor’s position will now pay 14 thousand dollars a year while the Deputy mayor position pays 11 thousand and councillors get 10 thousand dollars.
All the salaries are up by between 23 hundred and 28 hundred dollars.
Southgate normally reviews salaries prior to the next municipal election.
