The province will pick up three-quarters of the tab for an expansion of 10th Street East in the Victoria Park area.
The section in question is between 6th Avenue and 9th Avenue East.
It’s long been a priority for Owen Sound because of bottlenecks at the intersection of 9th Avenue.
But it’s even more of a necessity now because of the rec centre being built at Victoria Park, which is expected to significantly increase the traffic volumes.
And the city has learned it will most likely be approved for more than 1.2 million dollars in provincial funds to pay for the project.
A new entrance to Victoria Park, controlled by traffic lights, will be created at 7th Avenue.
The intersection at 9th Avenue will also be expanded, with the most significant result being that more vehicles will be able to turn left from 10th Street.
The total cost of the project is estimated at 1.7 million dollars.
The Ministry of Transportation says it will pay 1.3 million of that cost.
Money is available from the MTO because the road is the connecting link to several highways.
The City will be on the hook for 477 thousand dollars which will come out of gas tax rebates.
