Two years and 50 thousand dollars later — the uphill battle with Owen Sound Council looks like it may be over for the Bruce Grey Catholic School Board.
City Council has withdrawn its intent to designate the original portion of the St. Mary’s High School as a heritage building.
Catholic Board Chair Norm Bethune says the bottom line is it would be too costly to bring the old portion of the school up to code.
The board has wanted to demolish the abandoned 1891 wing of the school.
Bethune says the Catholic Board will sit down with Council to iron out any misunderstandings.
Bethune says the board knows what City Council doesn’t want so they will find out what members do want.
Owen Sound Council still has the power to approve any plans made for the site and can re-file the intent for the heritage designation.
The Bruce Grey Catholic School Board has spent about 50 thousand dollars in engineering and architect fees in an attempt to appease the City over the matter.
