A leash-free dog park will soon be established near the east harbour in Owen Sound, north of the old CP railway station.
Mary Catherine McArthur and Jeff Armstrong — through their company Sound Bay Properties — have donated the use of approximately one acre of land for the purpose.
It will be a fenced public park, open around the clock, and will be developed with trails, green space, parking and lighting.
It’s part of a larger redevelopment of the east harbour by Sound Bay and McArthur Tire.
McArthur says her inspiration has come from visiting dog parks in other cities.
She’s long been aware that something similar is needed in Owen Sound.
Armstrong says many people already walk their dogs in the area, so it’s a natural to transform part of the area into a leash-free park.
The city will be responsible for waste pickup, but the developers will ensure the placement of dispensers with bags so people can clean up after their pets.
The developers will also take care of park maintenance.
Council applauded the idea but it’s not official yet until an agreement is signed between the city and the developers listing who’s responsible for what.
It would also include a provision that the city is responsible for liability insurance, similar to the agreement overseeing the skateboard park across the harbour.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners is thrilled with the announcement saying this is the most unique gift the McArthurs have given to the city.
