South Bruce Peninsula is implementing a full garbage bag tag system.
The town of South Bruce Peninsula will move to a full garbage bag tag system as of September 1st.
Currently residents are allowed one free bag each week with a total of three bags per property.
The change in the bylaw will take away the one free bag and all bags will require a a dollar 50 bag tag.
Councillor and Waste Management Committee Member Dan Kerr says they have been working towards this goal for about three years.
Kerr notes Georgian Bluffs recently went to a full bag tag system and they have seen an increase in their waste diversion rate to 40 per cent.
South Bruce Peninsula is only at 17 per cent — and Kerr says that should be a clue to the people that the full bag tag system works.
At the next committee of the whole meeting — Council will look at a report to solve some concerns regarding apartment buildings.
Kerr says some of the issues they are looking at are should they require apartment owners to provide recycling bins and should they be able to have more than three bags per property.
Kerr says the revenue from the bag tags was originally going to come off of taxes.
He says now they would like to see the money put into a reserve to increase the life of the landfill site.
