There is a big controversy over the new name of the town’s Regional Recreation Complex.
Mayor Kathi Maskell is defending the decision to name the new 10.5 million dollar recreation complex “the P and H Centre” — which stands for Parrish and Heimbecker.
The name has sparked public controversy over whether or not a private company should have its name on a municipal building.
Maskell says the name reflects P and H’s 300 thousand dollar donation to the project.
She says it was the fundraising committee that came up with the naming opportunity strategy.
Maskell says P and H’s donation helped ensure the fundraising portion of the project was complete within a years time.
She adds that as Hanover’s largest employer — P and H has made many generous contributions to the town over the years — especially in the area of health care.
Maskell adds that a lot of input went into the naming of the facility.
Maskell hopes residents will adjust to the name sooner than later.
Meanwhile work continues on the P and H Centre, and the grand opening is slated for October 1st.
