We’re getting reaction this afternoon to allegations the husband of Simcoe Grey M-P has been making promises he apparently can’t keep.
A front page story in today’s Toronto Star claims that on the night former Edmonton MP Rahim Jaffer was arrested on drug and drunk driving charges he was treated to a very expensive dinner by a businessman who’s now accused of fraud.
The Star story suggests the man Jaffer had dinner with wrote an email the next day saying quote: “Jaffer has opened up the Prime Minister’s office to us.”
The meal at a Toronto restaurant reportedly cost over three thousand dollarsm and some of the guests were apparently paid escorts.
Now the Globe and Mail says a spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s office calls it “absurd” to suggest Mr. Jaffer has any sway in government.
Jaffer lost his seat in 2008 but has allegedly been giving out his MP business cards since then.
His wife, Simcoe Grey MP Helena Guergis has recently come under fire for a temper tantrum at the Charlottetown airport and a letter writing campaign in her favour from her own staff.
Calls from Bayshore Broadcasting News to Guergis’ office have not yet been returned.
But the Globe quotes the Prime Minister’s spokesperson Martin Paquet as saying quote: Rahim Jaffer is a private citizen” and ” This is a personal matter and we will not comment any further.”
And just as this story comes out, Helena Guergis is sending out one of her semi-regular flyers to her constituents.
The flyer shows pictures of the MP at various community events and it points out her accomplishments in 2009 and so far this year.
