There will be no Harry Biermans Community Classic this year.
Organizing committee member Bud Halpin says they have decided to forego their annual fund-raising for the Chesley Hospital in favour of the current fundraising project for the Chesley Medical Centre.
Halpin says the committee believes there is only so much fundraising dollars in the community and they’ve decided to step aside this year.
He says this isn’t the first time they’ve gone this route.
It was also cancelled once in favour of the “Phase Three” fundraising event for the Chesley and District High School.
Halpin says they couldn’t go ahead with their event and then offer the money to the medical clinic because their mandate specifically states that funds from the HBCC must go to the Chesley hospital.
The annual Bierman’s Classic walk, run and rollerblade has raised over a quarter-million-dollars for the hospital over the past 20 years or so.
Halpin says the community classic committee will meet again this coming winter and plans will be made for a 2011 fundraising walk.
