Five young people had a very close call after their nine foot boat capsized in heavy waves just off Chantry Island.
When their boat overturned on Saturday — four of those on board were able to swim back to the island, the fifth swam to the shore at the south end of Southampton.
Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard helicopters were dispatched to the scene with a U.S. copter out of Detroit first to arrive.
The four survivors on the island were transported by air to the shore near the old Southampton water treatment plant where emergency medical teams were waiting.
All five were treated on the scene for hypothermia then transferred to hospital for further checking and observation.
Police have not released the names of the young people involved.
In another boating incident on Lake Huron Saturday — five people were rescued north of Kincardine after they sent out a mayday call from their 20 foot Boston Whaler.
The mayday call, in the late afternoon, indicated their boat was in trouble off Lorne Beach about 10 kilometres north of Kincardine.
The OPP and other emergency units, including a Coast guard helicopter and rescue vessel were dispatched to the scene.
OPP officers were able to assist the boat occupants in getting ashore when their vessel drifted within reach of the officers.
All the boat occupants were uninjured.
