It’s a race car with a difference — and it’ll be on display throughout the region this spring.
Project Track Champion is an initiative to give those in a wheelchair a front line look at the life of a race car driver.
Its the brainchild of local race enthusiast Denny Snider of Durham who tours with the specially accessible vehicle — described as the only one of its kind in the world.
Snider says its a retrofitted 1991 Thunderbird with a driver door large enough to fit a wheelchair.
It also holds several passengers.
Snider says it can’t be used as a race car — but does give those with physical challenges some idea of what its like to be behind the wheel.
The specialty race car has given more than a thousand ride-alongs so far and hopes to elevate that number to 2010 by the end of this year.
The car will be on display at several locations in our area including the Heritage Place Shopping Centre in Owen Sound from April 5th to 11th and at the Home and Cottage Expo at the Bayshore Community Centre April 24th and 25th.
Snider says the car will also be on display for five weekends through May at Sauble Speedway.
