Drivers in Owen Sound are not getting the message about using their cell phones while they’re behind the wheel.
Deputy Police Chief Bill Sornberger says numerous drivers have been charged by officers since enforcement of the law began in February.
15 charges were laid in February alone.
Ontario passed a law last October designed to prevent people from using phones to talk or text while driving — but a grace period was instituted.
Drivers were given warnings instead of a ticket, which carries a fine of at least 155 dollars and up to 500.
The law also covers such electronic devices as handheld video games and mp3 players.
Drivers are permitted to use hands-free devices to make calls.
Sornberger says drivers had ample warning of both the law and the grace period — so there’s no reason for people to have not gotten the message that using a cell phone while driving is against the law.
