Local star gazing events to mark Earth Hour tonight have been cancelled due to the overcast skies.
The Bruce County Astronomical Society will no longer be setting up telescopes at Harrison Park in Owen Sound or at Legault’s parking lot in Saugeen Shores.
Former Vice President John Hlynialuk says these events are always weather dependent.
He adds there’s another event to look forward to next month if you were planning to come out tonight.
The Society will set up telescopes after dark at Grey Roots Museum outside Owen Sound on April 17th.
However, Hlynialuk still encourages you to take part in tonight’s world wide event by turning off non-essential lights at home or work tonight from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
He points out that just because we can’t look at our stars tonight, we can still watch the lights go out in Owen Sound and Saugeen Shores.
The city of Owen Sound is planning to dim the lights in as many municipal buildings as possible tonight to reduce their energy use.
The Planeteers, an environmental club at Saugeen District Secondary School, were planning on taking part in tonight’s event at Legault’s.
Member Nicola Bruce says the whole idea of the event is to encourage people to reduce light pollution where they can.
More than 250 cities in Canada will be taking part in Earth Hour along with 115 countries around the world.
The lights will be turned off on such landmarks as the CN tower and the Eiffel Tower in Paris to show concern for climate change.
