After hearing some shocking stats about their landfill site Council is moving ahead with a waste diversion study and management evaluation study.
Councillors approved a 28 thousand dollar management evaluation study and a 13 thousand dollar waste diversion study at Tuesday night’s meeting.
The waste management committee invited consultant Brad Pryde of the civil engineering firm Pryde, Schropp and McComb to speak to council about the landfill.
Pryde says the town’s diversion rate has steadily declined every year since 2004.
The average municipality in Bruce County has a diversion rate of 30 to 45 per cent and South Bruce Peninsula is only at 17 per cent.
Pryde says with the current rates — the Amabel landfill site will be closed in 2020 and only a few years ago the estimated closure date was 2029.
Councillor Dan Kerr — who is a member of the waste management committee — invited the consultant to speak to Council.
Kerr says he is delighted with the decision to move ahead with the studies now and now wait any longer.
Mayor Gwen Gilbert says she was very surprised with the numbers that were presented at the meeting.
Gilbert can’t believe their numbers keep going down when the province is expecting them to go up.
Funds for the studies will be coming out of a waste management reserve.
