If your struggling with siblings and aging parents – There is a book that might be for you.
Francine Russo, author of “They’re Your Parents Too – How siblings can survive their parents aging without driving each other crazy” provides guidance for the major life experience.
Russo, who has some personal experience on the topic, says so many siblings do not deal with this transition well.
Russo says the reason for that is because people fall into their old roles they played when they were younger – and that doesn’t work anymore.
She says often times old wounds are stirred up and people find themselves reacting out of the old wounds or unmet needs.
Russo says sometimes parents don’t realize it, but they can set up a sibling rivalry just through everyday conversation.
She suggests going right to the sibling and talk about it themselves to avoid a boiling point.
There is some good news – Russo says there are enormous opportunities for personal growth, understanding and increased closeness with family.
One of the most important pieces of advice Russo has to offer is do not wait.
She says ask all the questions you’ve ever needed to know and have important conversations because there will not be time later.
