With the March Break upon us and with the weather being so nice police are warning children that river banks and ice floes are not play areas.
South Bruce OPP Constable Kevin Martin says he realizes river banks and streams are a magnet for some children, who love to go exploring.
The problem is with the snow-melt recently because of the nice weather, flowing water is rather strong in our region and a faulty step could be tragic.
Martin says despite the nice weather there is still some ice-covered water, particularly near the Lake Huron shoreline.
He says the ice simply is not safe and everyone should stay away from it.
Martin says for instance if a 12 year old falls through thin ice, it’s now up to a police officer usually, who weighs far more that has to negotiate that unstable ice to perform a rescue.
Martin says so far, so good.
There has been no serious issues when it comes to thin ice and flowing rivers and streams.
He urges parents to sit down with their children to drive home the point of staying away from those dangerous areas this time of year.
