Owen Sound is still waiting to assume responsibility for the section of Highway 26 within city limits.
It’s been more than two years since the city made an overture to the Ministry of Transportation to take over the eastern most section of 16th Street East between 18th and 28th Avenues East.
It’s the last stretch of provincial highway within Owen Sound that is not controlled by the city.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says the MTO is planning a two-year review of all of the connecting links in its system but she says Owen Sound doesn’t want to wait for that review, given the amount of time they’ve already been waiting.
The city wants to have control over all of the pavement within its boundaries so it can better manage speed limits and developments — including two proposed new shopping centres on both sides of Highway 26.
