A long-term program to enhance safety margins and improve output at Bruce Power has hit a major milestone.
Spokesperson John Peevers says the last unit to undergo a process called core re-ordering which involves changing the direction in which fuel is inserted into the core, has been completed.
Peevers says not only will Unit 8 be safer but it allows the firm to boost power by three percent or 25-megawatts.
He says that increase provides enough energy to power 25 thousand homes or a city roughly the size of Owen Sound.
When Bruce Power took over control of the site in 2001, the Bruce B units were held at 90 per cent of the design capability to avoid what could have been accidents in the industry.
Peevers says by improving safety margins, it also allowed the company to increase power generation.
He says now all units on site have undergone the process with those in Bruce B being upgraded over the past four years.
Peevers says as a result, it has allowed for the generation of 100 extra megawatts of electricity — enough for 100 thousand homes.
