The shovel is in the ground and work has started on the new 38 million dollar Regional Recreation Centre in Owen Sound.
Harold Sutherland Construction has the contract to begin the excavation and servicing work at Victoria Park.
Crews started the job Monday morning by moving soccer nets, clearing snow and excavating the site.
The company will also install new water-sewer lines for the facility.
The first phase of the project will cost 661 thousand dollars.
Council committed to the project despite the fact it hasn’t heard from the provincial and federal governments on an extension to use the infrastructure funding.
The city could be on the hook for another 8 million dollars on top of its 9 million dollar commitment.
The project is five months behind schedule.
The entire rec centre project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2011.
