If Progressive Conservative MPP for Kitchener-Waterloo, Elizabeth Witmer has her way, bullying in school will be a thing of the past.
Witmer says she has done some research and has realized that bullying is a problem in all schools across the province.
She says according to a study by the Centre for Addicition and Mental Health, one in three students experiences bullying at school and almost one in three students have bullied someone else.
Witmer says she has heard from groups in Bruce and Grey that are concerned about the lack of action to address the bullying problem within the schools in the public system here.
When asked if an “Education Ombudsman” would help solve the issue, she indicated that a situation such as that, cannot be covered in a private members bill such as she has presented.
She is calling for the third week in November each year to be Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in Ontario.
Witmer says the idea is to hav every Safe School Team in the province develop activities for their school during the special week.
Meanwhile, Bluewater District School Board Secondary School Superintendent Alana Murray, although not admitting any problems locally, believes any solution needs to be province-wide.
