It’s a different way of exploring the history of the Canadian Side of the Great Lakes.
Former Port McNicoll resident Dr. Lorenzo Marcolin has put together a book of historic post cards featuring Canadian Harbour scenes from 1894 to 1960 including half a dozen featuring Owen Sound Harbour.
He says this labour of love covers just about every major port from Thunder Bay, to Georgian Bay and down the St. Lawrence River to Montreal.
In fact the post card journey begins at the Lakehead, and visually works its way down the lakes to the St. Lawrence.
Marcolin says besides the half dozen post cards from the Owen Sound Marine and Rail Museum, the book contains 270 of his own personal historic cards which he has collected over the past 40 years.
He says the cover photo on the book is a post card from Owen Sound showing two men on the Sydenham River looking down at a fishing boat that has recently sunk.
Marcolin says he has other post cards that show just how busy the Port of Owen Sound was during the heyday of the CPR when both passenger vessels and cargo ships arrived and departed on a regular basis.
The book which is called A Great Lakes Treasury of Old Post Cards, Canadian Harbour Scenes 1894-1960, is published by Dundurn Press.
