Good news from Grey Bruce Health Services.
Officials have declared the VRE outbreak over at the Owen Sound hospital.
Unit 4-1 is now re-opening to admissions after the last two tests were negative for presence for VRE.
The unit had been closed with strict visitor restrictions for the last week after four of the 24 patients tested positive for VRE.
President and CEO Maureen Solecki says two patients still have VRE and are in isolation — but have no symptoms of the disease.
The hospital has also lifted its visitor restrictions.
Solecki notes they have been getting help from infectious disease specialists from both Public Health and the University Health Network in Toronto.
She says they were impressed with the hospital’s ongoing infection control practices.
Grey Bruce Health Services staff will meet next week to analyze the latest outbreak and find out how it could have happened.
The same Unit 4-1 was closed because of similar VRE outbreaks twice last year.
Solecki says they have learned these outbreaks are becoming more common.
And she notes the entire health care community will need to meet and discuss how best to keep the disease from re-occurring and spreading in hospitals.
