The C. Difficile outbreak at the Hanover and District Hospital is over.
The Hanover and District Hospital is breathing a sigh of relief.
After battling the super bug since November, the Grey Bruce Health Unit has lifted the C. difficile outbreak status at the hospital.
Of the 10 patients that contracted c-difficile, six have died.
And while c-difficile was not the direct cause of death it was a contributing factor in each of the deaths.
Vice President of Patient Care Services Reta Sproule says the experience has left a lasting mark on the hospital.
She says the Hospital has adopted a number of new best practices to protect patients against future outbreaks.
Most of these practices involve cleaning — such as spraying down tubs with special disinfectants after patients bath and using disposable plastic caps on all of the patient call buzzers.
Sproule says the hospital couldn’t have done it alone as the public health unit and the Infection Control Team helped a great deal.
In order to have the c-difficile outbreak status lifted, the Hospital had to go 30 days without a new case.
