The 2009 stats are out for the shared Hanover Walkerton landfill site.
When it comes to recycling — Hanover residents can take a lesson from their neighbours to the west.
Hanover’s residential garbage increased 4 per cent last year while Walkerton residents managed to decrease their garbage to the landfill by 6 per cent.
Hanover Councillor Peter Hambly commends Walkerton residents for a job well done.
As for Hanover’s increase — Hambly feels its respectable due to the town’s population and business volume growth.
A suggestion to increase bag tags in Hanover in order to encourage more recycling was shot down by Council.
The town is switching to mandatory clear bags in July and Council has decided that that is enough change for now.
With only a few years of life left in the shared landfill site — Hanover and Walkerton residents are encouraged to reduce reuse and recycle as much as possible.
In total Hanover residents discarded 969 tonnes of garbage in 2009.
Walkerton residents disposed of 483 tonnes of trash.
