The education period for Ontario’s new ban on the use of hand held devices while driving ends today.
The new law makes it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email while using a hand held cell phone or other hand held communications device.
The Countering Distracted Driving and Promoting Green Transportation Act came into effect on October 26th 2009, but the law had a grace period so drivers could get used to the new rules.
If you are caught using a hand held device while driving starting today — the fine is 155 dollars.
Huron County OPP Constable Joanna VanMierlo says there are exceptions for things like GPS devices but you have to be using them in a hands free manner.
South Bruce OPP Constable Kevin Martin says if you have to make a call on your cell phone while driving, the best option is to pull over.
Martin says to properly do that, your vehicle must be off the road, properly parked, and not blocking traffic.
