Very disappointed is the reaction from the Medical Officer of Health for Grey Bruce to the not guilty verdict that raw milk producer Michael Schmidt .
Doctor Hazel Lynn and the Health Unit’s lawyers will have to examine the written judgement before making any further comment about the dismissal of the 19 charges against Schmidt.
She says however any decision to appeal this judgement will have to be made at the Crown Attorney level and this is out of the health units area of responsibility.
Doctor Lynn says this raw milk case is such a tiny issue compared to the major health problems that are facing people in Grey Bruce and she wishes they didn’t have to spend so much time on it.
She says tobacco use, heart disease, motor vehicle accidents and obesity are issues that health officials should be spending time and money on rather than a court case challenging a very good law.
Doctor Lynn also says very few people are consuming raw milk and the ones who are are not farm families, but wealthy people from Toronto who can afford the high price of the product.
She says most people cant afford raw milk anyway and she is more concerned about kids in Grey Bruce going to school who cant even afford any kind of milk, let alone raw milk.
Doctor Lynn also had some comments about the celebrity chefs who backed Mr. Schmidt and used his raw milk.
She says they use that milk only for sauces, which are cooked and therefore they are pasteurizing that milk before its served to the public.
