There is a new kid in the apple orchard in the Thornbury area and he is about to make some waves in the apple industry.
The new variety of apple is called The Red Prince and will be officially unveiled at an event in Toronto next month.
The Red Prince is just one of several new varieties of apples that consumers are finding in the produce section of their grocery store or farmers markets.
Kevin Martin is the exclusive distributor of the Red Prince and also grows them in his orchards and describes this fruit as deep red in colour, very crunchy with a distinctive sweet and tart flavour.
He says what makes this apple so special is how well is can be stored once it has been harvested.
Martin says the Red Prince as still firm and juicy well into the late spring and early summer as it was when it was picked the previous fall.
He says this is one of several new types of apples being grown by the industry including the Honey Crisp and Ambrosia that are being embraced by an apple loving public.
Martin says while the public is taking to these new apples, several older varieties like the russet and snow apples are slowly disappearing.
However the classic apple in Ontario, the Macintosh still remains very popular with the public.
Martin says 10 years ago he thought is was losing its popularity, but continues to be a long time favourite.
