Georgian Bluffs is getting a great deal on a replacement compactor at its landfill site near Hepworth.
The township has been renting a compactor since its old one was destroyed in a fire in August, and council decided at its meeting on Wednesday night to use a portion of an insurance settlement from the fire to buy the compactor outright.
Council approved a staff recommendation to accept the settlement, worth just over 268 thousand dollars and buy the rental unit for 157 thousand.
The owner of the unit will rebuild it and provide the township with a 12 month warranty, says Councillor Tom Wiley, chair of the township’s environmental committee.
He says the township is getting a good deal.
The balance of the insurance settlement will be placed in a landfill reserve fund, Wiley says.
This fund is intended to be used for capital purchases at the landfill, not for operation of the site.
