Author and athlete Laura Robinson will be speaking at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre tonight.
Robinson is a former member of Canada’s national cycling team and a former Canadian champion in rowing.
She has been a free-lance journalist for nearly 20 years and is the author of five books on issues in sports.
Currently, Robinson coaches the Anishinaabe Racers, a mountain bike and Nordic ski team at Cape Croker First Nation Elementary School on the Bruce Peninsula.
CFUW – Canadian Federation of University Women – Southport is bringing her in to talk about Women, Human Rights and the Olympics.
The topic is of timely interest as it was back in December the Supreme Court of Canada announced it would not hear an appeal from female athletes.
The women contend the Charter of Rights governs the Olympic Games and that Vancouver organizers are breaking the law by hosting only men’s ski jumping.
They were seeking leave to appeal two lower-court rulings that said the charter cannot dictate which sports are included in the Winter Games.
The lower courts ruled that the charter does not apply to the International Olympic Committee, which makes the decisions about which sports are included in the Games.
Tonight’s discussion starts at 7 PM and is free to all.
