Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin now has its first Specialist High Skills Major Program.
Huron Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell says it allows high school students to specialize in courses connected with energy and the environment.
She says they’ll be able to enter the workforce with a higher skill set than what is offered in courses already because the material will be more targeted.
Mitchell says if students plan to go to seek a post-secondary education after high school, the specialized courses could make it easier for them to pursue training as a chemist, architect, or engineer related to green energy.
Mitchell says energy is the newest skill to be added to the list of Specialist High Skills Major programs offered in high schools across Ontario.
An agriculture Specialist High Skills Major program is already offered at Chesley District High School.
