The Grey Roots Museum and Archives in Owen Sound has received a large late Christmas present.
Community Relations Coordinator Lara Javalyn says they have just received a grant worth $21,650 from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.
Javalyn says the money will go towards the implementation of the Grey Roots Community Seniors Outreach Program.
Javalyn says its a program that will enable for area seniors to share their personal histories and experiences with the museum.
Javalyn says the ball has already started rolling with local seniors centres getting involved and plans for the new year for the museum to visit the centres to discuss what history is important and interests seniors.
She says this is a very important projects as seniors are a vital part of our community and have lived our history.
Javalyn says the museum already has close to 200 volunteers – most of them seniors – and is always looking for more seniors to get involved in the museum.
Another part of the program will be a speaking segment where Aboriginal and non-aboriginal elders will hold lectures to local seniors.
Javalyn says a third – and very important way- the money will be spent is going towards the purchase of two motorized scooters to allow seniors to get around the museum and grounds easier.
The program supports the Government of Canada’s social goals to enhance the quality of life and participation of seniors in our community.
