As students get set to return to school from the Christmas break — the Bruce Grey Catholic School Board is highlighting a new approach to school.
Hanover’s Holy Family School has implemented an after school Orff Music program.
Teacher Sylvia Dunn say the Orff Music program incorporates music and literacy.
She says the program is based on the rhythm of speech which students transfer onto their musical instruments xylophones and metallophones.
The program was made possible thanks to a seven thousand dollar Ministry of Education grant that was used to purchase the instruments.
The program is based on the teachings of German composer Carl Orff.
And while the Orff Music program is new for the school board it has been around for years and is used all around the world.
At this point of time it is still an extracurricular activity, but based on its success there is talk about expanding it to other Bruce Grey Catholic elementary schools.
The Orff Music program is geared towards students from kindergarten to grade six.
Dunn says the students love the program and hopes other schools will follow Holy Family’s example and implement their own Orff Music program.
