It’s been a great year for trail development in Saugeen Shores.
The two biggest highlights include the Gore Drain trail and a new trail along North Shore and Miramichi Bay Roads.
Parks and Trails Committee member Dave Cheer says they inched ever closer to completing the 36 kilometre loop that will run from MacGregor Point Provincial Park to north of the Saugeen River.
Cheer says the committee has two projects it would like council to consider during the 2010 budget discussions.
He says people want a trail that goes from the flag in Southampton to the mouth of the Saugeen River — noting it would be a short trail that follows the water.
Cheer says Scubby’s Point at the north side of the mouth of the river has been a “hit and miss” park for a few years.
He says it needs to be a place where people can sit and enjoy sunsets, fishing, or walking by the water.
Mayor Mike Smith won’t make any promises about what trail projects council might approve for 2010 — noting that money is going to be tight this coming year.
He says 2009 was an unusual year because the town got federal and provincial stimulus money for both the Gore Drain and North Shore trails.
