Having a hard time doing up that top button after the holidays and want to drop those holidays pounds as part of a new year’s resolution?
The battle of the bulge is a common one — especially at this time of the year as people make the common weight loss resolution.
Grey Bruce Health Unit Public Health Dietician Kathryn Forsyth says there are many ways to help you lose weight and then maintain your weight.
Forsyth says one of the way is to up your fibre intake as fibre keeps your hunger satisfied longer and also helps flush out your system of toxins.
She also says to up your water intake to 6 to 10 glasses a day — keep alcohol to a minimum as it is empty calories and also to limit your caffeine intake.
The best way to maintain a healthy weight is to follow Canada’s food guide and portion size.
Forsyth says one of the worst things people can do to lose weight is to skip meals – eat less or starve themselves.
More often smaller meals are a popular way to maintain your weight.
Forsyth says to keep your goals realistic — one to two pounds a week is healthy.
And be patient as it may take a few months to lose 20 pounds — but slow and steady is good.
Forsyth says make the weight loss a change of lifestyle not just for a few months — it will take a good month to get used to new eating patterns.
She also says adding more physical activity in every day will help — take the stairs, walk to work, park further away.
Forsyth says finding friends at your work place that want to get more physically active can help too.
Find your motivation and stick with it — whether it be to enjoy life better, to get healthier or just to look better — find it and stick with it.
