Southgate has balked at a 24 per cent increase in the cost of policing by the OPP.
Mayor Don Lewis says the proposed contract would go from roughly 650 thousand dollars this year to 850 thousand.
That amount would include another OPP officer for roughly 135 thousand dollars a year.
Lewis says the number of calls have dropped 20 per cent over the last five years, so why do we need more police.
He agrees there are some increases you can’t avoid since the current contract was written five years ago, but he wants the OPP to come up with a compromise.
The Southgate Mayor says maybe they can start off with a part-time officer and phase in the hours over the next few years.
Don Lewis says the OPP will likely return to Southgate council in January with a revised contract proposal.
