A Bruce County Councillor would like to see a special fund created for acquisitions to the Bruce County Museum and Archives’ collection.
No specific fund exists currently, and the museum relies on the Bruce County Historical Society to provide items, through donations, or purchases.
Mitch Twolan is the chair the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre Committee.
He says if a special fund was established in the budget, it could be given to the historical society so they could pick and choose what kind of artifacts to get for the museum.
Twolan says the society has the expertise to work with the museum and decide what is needed for the collection.
He says it would be best to have the money funnel through the historical society because of the working relationship it has with the museum.
Twolan says if it was set up any other way, everyone would be asking the county for financial help to purchase artifacts for the museum.
He says the Bruce County Historical Society is best suited to control the fund, but no in-depth discussions have taken place yet at the committee level to get a fund established.
It’s been a unique year so far for additions to the Bruce County Museum’s collection.
The historical society has already secured a World War I uniform and the papers of a participant in the Rebellion of 1837.
The Museum is also hoping for a Rural Economic Development grant from the province to promote the county’s historic lighthouses in partnership with the Bruce Coast Lighthouse Partners.
Twolan hopes the grant application is successful because it would cover 50 percent of the project.
Plans include increasing the historical awareness of lighthouses and a marine exhibit on the General Hunter ship and the war of 1812 in 2012.
