It brings a whole new meaning to the biblical phrase, let there be light.
St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Owen Sound is now solar powered, after installing a number of solar panels on its roof.
Church Board of Management Chair Dave Edwards says the whole idea came from a magazine article they saw about a church in California going solar.
He says since then the idea had been sitting around for a year or so until the Provinces Green Energy Act provided the incentive to move ahead.
He says this will be a money making venture for the church as they can sell power to the grid for about 80 cents a kilowatt hour and then purchase back power at 11 cents a kilowatt hour.
Funding for the installation of the solar panels came from a substantial bequest the church received, and the sustainability committee felt this was a good use for that money.
Edwards says the panels have been on the roof since the summer, but provincial red tape kept them from hooking up the grid until just a few weeks ago.
He says there are two blocks of solar panels on the roof and under ideal conditions could produce up to 22 kilowatts of power a day.
