Today is the official start of winter and shortest day of the year.
The winter solstice takes place at 12:47 PM and marks the time when the northern hemisphere is tilted farthest from the sun.
Wilson says the earth tilts on it’s axis which also means the southern hemisphere is marking their first official day of summer.
The solstice does not take place at the same point in our calendar because of what Wilson calls human medlings.
He says it can happen as early as the 20th of December and as late as the 23rd.
Wilson adds from an astronomical stand point the solstice doesn’t change much.
