There are still many challenges for farmers in the region.
George Schrijver of WCM Consulting says competition from the U-S and around the world is bringing prices in the region down.
He says if farmers don’t meet the requirements of the world market chain then they won’t be able to sell their goods.
Schrijver likes that fact that more and more people are interested in buying locally grown beef and produce — but he notes it still represents a small number.
Some farmers continues to push the need to grow corn to produce ethanol.
But Schrijver warns there is no guarantee that energy producers will buy Canadian corn, they could buy it from somewhere else.
