The road for expansion is being paved for Tiverton’s Bruce Power — in Alberta.
That province’s Energy Minister Mel Knight has announced he welcomes nuclear power companies to set up shop in the province.
Bruce Power Media Relations Spokesperson Steve Cannon welcomes the news.
He says in general it means nuclear power is on an even playing field with other types of energy in Alberta.
Cannon says it also means should they decide to actively look at a business case, they can without government opposition and have a preferred site north of Peace River.
However, Cannon confirms there are no formal applications nor environmental assessments planned for Alberta at this time.
The Alberta government meanwhile will not help companies pursue nuclear projects, subsidize them or promise to buy the energy produced.
Alberta will also be choosy about what projects go ahead as well, not allowing ones that threaten health or the environment.
The news follows consultations with Albertans, particularly a recent phone survey that found two-thirds are OK with building nuclear power plants.
