Tomorrow is the deadline to get in nominations for Ontario’s Outstanding Young farmer for 2010.
The Chair of the Outstanding Young Farmer Program, Eadie Steele, says there are several requirements to be eligible for the award.
She says individuals or couples who get a minimum of two-thirds of their gross revenue from farming and are under the age of 40 as of January 1st in the year of competition can be nominated.
Steele also says demonstrating leadership in the agricultural industry is also another requirement.
In addition, they also must have shown progress made in their agriculture career, implemented environmental and safety practices on their farm and have made positive contributions to the well-being of their community.
Steele says this program has been inoperation for 30 years and this an excellent way to get out the message that there is a positive future for farming in Ontario and it is a good career choice for young people.
She also says this program is helping attract more young people to the agricultural sector.
The 2010 winner will be selected at the Ontario regional event being held at the Ramada Inn in Belleville from April 2nd to the 4th.
They will then represent Ontario at the National Awards Program, to be held in Victoria in December, 2010.
Nomination forms can be downloaded from the OOYF website at www.oyfontario.ca and must be received by December 15th.
