The final step in the restoration of the historic steeple of St. George’s Anglican Church in Owen Sound is just getting underway.
Construction crews are beginning to remove the old steel roof on the upper part of the steeple and will soon replace with special copper roofing.
St George’s official, John Hull says this is a special type of copper that has been treated to prevent it from turning green and staining the limestone at the base of the tower.
The restoration of the limestone base of the steeple was completed during the summer months and Hull says it could take six or more weeks to finish the sheet metal work on the steeple.
Church spokesperson Nancy King says the total cost of the restoration is in the 300 thousand dollar range and fund raising efforts continue.
She says since they are not a large congregation, they are looking for help from the community to help restore and preserve this historic building which was constructed in 1881.
King says they have already received donations from as far away as England and the U-S and have even received a large donation from Central Westside United church as recognition of Christians helping Christians.
