Theres a new kind of drug trafficking going on in Owen Sound and other parts of the region.
At its base, it appears to be perfectly legal.
But the ramifications have made oxycontin a prescription painkiller, the most widely sold drug on Owen Sounds streets right now.
Chief Tom Kaye says while its legal for doctors to prescribe oxycontin, it is considered a controlled substance and can’t be sold on the streets.
Kaye says each pill is going for as much as 40 dollars.
The Chief says the problem is the ease with which doctors prescribe the drug.
There seems to also be very little in terms of following up with patients to see who has the drug, how much of it, and how frequently they get it.
Kaye expects the situation to get even worse as more and more people become hooked on the addictive painkiller.
