The Owen Sound and Area YMCA has awarded its 2009 Peace Medallion.
It goes to Owen Sound Collegiate French teacher and peace activist Charlotte Lehmann.
Lehmann says in her activities with students, they’ve done various things to encourage world peace.
They include t-shirt decorating, a hand-tracing display, websites, and more recently, collecting 517 signatures to support the International Day of Peace that took place on September 21st.
Lehmann says peace has always been in her heart and is extremely important to her.
She believes the current younger generation will bring about change — and peace into our world.
Lehmann is a longtime member of the Grey-Bruce Coalition for Peace and Justice.
She says they meet once a month and also run special screenings of peace and social justice themed movies at the Owen Sound library.
Lehmann adds they also bring in guest speakers, the most recent one was activist Jim Loney who was held hostage in Iraq for 118 days.
Last year’s Peace Medallion winner was Durham activist Frank Barningham.
The YMCA Peace Medallion is handed out in conjunction with YMCA World Peace Week.
