Keeping fit can start at any age.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit — along with the provincial government — is organizing a campaign called Have a Ball Together.
The Best Start Resources Centre is who orchestrated the program.
The Have a Ball campaign promoting physical activity in young children, ages 2 to 5, has been going on for a few years now.
But Grey Bruce Health Unit Health promoter Crystal Ferguson – says the “together” part is new.
Ferguson says this program helps kids get active while using balls and things you just find around the house – like toilet paper and paper towel rolls.
There is one event happening at the Brooke Montessori Toddler School today where reps from the health unit go into the school and help the kids play in different ways.
Ferguson adds by keeping kids active it helps them with sleep and with eating healthier foods.
The program also helps adults get active – as Ferguson adds children learn from example.
The children are then sent home at the end of the day with literature for their parents so they continue to be active in creative ways at home.
In Ontario 28-percent of children are considered overweight or obese.
According to Active Healthy Kids Canada 87-percent of children and youth do not get enough physical activity.
