Grey County has called for a moratorium on wind turbine construction.
Councillor Howard Greig — the Mayor of Chatsworth — called for the moratorium at this week’s County Council meeting.
He says there is no denying that wind turbines are adversely affecting the health of people who live near them.
His request was for more research into wind farms by federal and provincial agencies responsible for public health, energy creation and energy management.
Greig says he had never really given the issue much thought until he attended a recent information meeting in Keady.
He says too many municipalities, and municipal politicians, don’t give the issue a whole lot of consideration until they’re confronted by stories of people who have become ill due to what they claim are the ill effects of turbines.
The motion was overwhelmingly but not unanimously supported by council.
Meaford Mayor Francis Richardson and Deputy Mayor Mike Traynor voted against it as did Southgate Mayor Don Lewis.
Grey will forward its resolution to other Ontario municipalities in the hope they will either support it or draft their own resolutions.
