Good medical news for residents of South Bruce and North Huron, a new doctor is coming to Wingham.
South Bruce Councillor Les Nichols is on the Wingham Doctor Recruitment Committee and says they have a verbal agreement with Doctor James Shuffield of Washington State and expect he will begin work locally early in 2010.
Nichols says Doctor Shuffield recently wrote the exam to practice medicine in Canada and is waiting for the results.
He says they’re confident the agreement will be finalized.
Nichols says it’s the first doctor they’ve recruited since 2002, and they’re still short five but this has raised the level of confidence.
He says Doctor Shuffield’s reason for relocating is because his wife is already working in the area.
Nichols says she is a midwife working at a facility in Milverton in Perth County but developed a large client base in the Wingham area.
Many residents of South Bruce travel to Wingham for medical care.
Wingham doctors also serve a large area of northern Huron County.
