Meaford council is coming to the rescue of the Golden Town Outreach food bank.
Mayor Francis Richardson says they’re offering the food bank the use of the office building at Memorial Park.
The food bank is currently located in the closed Meaford legion and had been planning to move in the spring.
But they’re desperate for a new space right away after the boiler at the legion died last week, leaving volunteers using heaters to keep the food from freezing.
Richardson says he directed staff to look at all the available buildings in the municipality and they came up with the administration building at the entrance to the park.
He says while the location is a bit out of the way, it’s not used during the winter months and could quickly be set up as a food bank.
The office has a heated area, a storage area, and washrooms.
Richardson says food bank Co-ordinator Ann Pickles has toured the space and seemed pleased.
However, he says he will understand if she turns the offer down.
Richardson says ideally the food bank would like to find a more permanent home, and they’ll only be able to use the Memorial Park spot until the office space is needed again in April.
However, Richardson thinks this is a good solution to get the food bank into a heated space for the winter months until something else can be worked out.
Pickles must meet with her board before giving council an answer.
The Golden Town Outreach Food Bank in Meaford serves over 200 people and client visits have jumped 30 per cent since September.
